Imagine the unique feeling of staying in a small, perfectly renovated medieval village in Tuscany, in which to enjoy peace and quiet and where every interior is designed, right down to the smallest detail, to ensure you have a memorable stay in Mammoli.
This Tuscan landscape has gentle hills bedecked by vineyards, olive trees and woods, with lonely farmhouses and castles nestling between dark cypress trees. Painters and photographers have been inspired by this reassuring scenery and its unique luminosity, as you will be inspired by the views from Castello di Mammoli.
The ancient castle, built in medieval times on an Etruscan and then Roman site, demolished as early as 1300 was considered impregnable, in fact up to now there was no trace of it before the complete restructuring carried out around 1990 by Dr. Giorgio Panelli on the buildings below the Mammoli church where they brought to light the remains of the fortified nucleus of the Mammoli castle.
It had its maximum splendor in the early Middle Ages for military and above all religious power.
In ancient times it was called by the people Castello di San Ginese or di San Genesio for the devotion to San Ginese consisting of a fortified nucleus and a monastery, but its original name was Mammoli, it was the residence of the Roman consul Mammoli.
The presence of this castle was found by Father Poggi in three parchments of the eleventh century in which not only is it called castellum or castrum but it is also said that there was such a castle surrounded by walls and pits.
In the 1st parchment it comes from 1072 as the 2nd parchment of 1075 and in the 3rd parchment of 1078 there is talk of a donation of part of the Castle of Mammoli to the Curia by Lamberto archpriest, which he had as a legacy from his family. in this case of the Mammoli monastery which was split off from the fortified nucleus below.
In fact, still today above the Castle of Mammoli (the fortified nucleus) is the Church of Mammoli (the monastery) always owned by the Curia and dedicated as at that time to San Ginese.
